Independence Bowl
Tickets-History of the Independence Bowl
In 1975, the board of directors of the
Shreveport-Bossier City Sports Foundation agreed that it was
time to bring a post season football game to northwest
Louisiana. On December 13, 1976 the first Independence Bowl was
fought out by McNeese State and Tulsa, the National
Collegiate Athletic Association rewarding Shreveport-Bossier
City with its certification. Honoring the 200th birthday of the
U.S. and backed by the military presence in this area, the
Independence Bowl was born, a fitting tribute to the soldiers
who fought for this nation's freedom. During its first 5 years,
the Independence Bowl worked closely with the SLC (Southland
Conference) who provided the host team for the event.
In 1981, the Directors of the bowl ended their
agreement with the SLC, which provided them the opportunity to
scour the country for the best teams available in the NCAA
Division I-A ranks. In 1995 the Poulan/Weed Eater Independence
Bowl changed hands again, signing a three-year agreement with
the Southeastern Conference for the fifth selection out of one
of the nation’s premier football conferences.
The Independence Bowl has a great history of
sponsoring close matches adding the joy and excitement you
