Fiesta Bowl Tickets - History of the Fiesta Bowl

The Fiesta Bowl, one of the Bowl Series Championship games, originated in 1971 due to the Western Athletic Conference's frustration. Desperately trying to find suitable bowl invitations for its champions, the Western Athletic Conference started its own Fiesta Bowl so that its best teams could receive they recognition they desrved.

The 1971 inaugural game featured the top ten Arizona State squad against top twenty opponent, Florida State. By 1975, the game attracted Big Eight co-champion, Nebraska, to go head-to-head against undefeated Arizona State in a matchup of top five teams. In 1977, the Fiesta Bowl was again able to attract a top five opponent in Penn State. In 1978, Arizona and Arizona State each joined the Pac-10 Conference, and the Fiesta Bowl's tie-in with the WAC ended. The game continued to attract high quality matchups and like all other major bowl match-ups, the Fiesta Bowl shifted to New Year's Day in '81.

Fiesta Bowl tickets are some of the hardest to get when the Bowl games start up because of the spectacular match-ups this bowl game has seen in past years. When the Bowl began in 1971, Sun Devil Stadium was the venue, but it has since switched to the University of Phoenix Stadium.
