This Bowl Championship Series title game ultimately decides which college football team will become that year’s NCAA Division I FBA National Football Champion. Ending the 1998 college football regular season, the first BCS championship was played when the Pac-10 and Big Ten conferences along with the Rose Bowl joined with the Bowl Alliance and created the Bowl Championship Series. Seperating itself from other collegiate championship bowl games, the BCS National Championship is not played in a tournament or playoff format. The Bowl Championship Series provides a system so that college football teams are ranked in relation to one another, and the top 2 teams at the season's end receive invitations to the BCS National Championship to determine that year's national champion. Because the BCS ranking formula is based on human voter polls and computer rankings, many critics bash the BCS system. Instances where teams have gone undefeated or ranked #1 by the Associated Press polls and were left out of the National Championship game fuel their disdain for the BCS. 2004 created the perfect example where the BCS format failed. The undefeated Auburn Tigers and the University of Utah Utes teams were both exempt from the championship game when both should have been strongly considered. The USA Today Coaches Poll is obligated to name the winner of the BCS title game as the National Champion in its final poll for the season. The winning team of the BCS National Championship Game is awarded both the AFCA National Championship Trophy and the National Football Foundation’s MacArthur Bowl National Championship Trophy. Prior to the Bowl Championship Series, the Bowl Coalition, determined a national champion and provided quality bowl games for the champions of its member conferences. From 1992-1994, the Bowl Coalition consisted of only five conferences: the SEC, Big 8, Southwest, ACC, and the Big East. Six bowl games were hosted through the Bowl Coalition including the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Gator Bowl and the Hancock Bowl. From '95-'97, the Bowl Alliance became responsible for determining the college football national champion. The Bowl Alliance officially replaced the Bowl Coalition.
